Protection of Human Rights in the Inter-American, African and European Systems

Course Description

Join the Monique and Roland Weyl People’s Academy of International Law for a survey of regional human rights systems. Regional human rights systems serve an important function in the promotion and protection of human rights. In Africa, the Americas, and Europe, the human rights systems of the African Union (AU), Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union (EU) and their decision making, reporting and monitoring bodies and tribunals play a significant role among their member states.

Course Content

  • Understand the Foundations of Regional Human Rights Systems: Explain the historical development and legal foundations of the Inter-American, European, and African human rights systems.
  • Analyze the Institutional Frameworks:  Identify the key institutions, treaties, and enforcement mechanisms within each regional system.
  • Evaluate State Responsibilities and Accountability Mechanisms: Examine how regional human rights systems determine state responsibility for human rights violations.
  • Apply Human Rights Law in a Regional Context: Assess case law from the Inter-American and European systems to understand legal reasoning and outcomes.
  • Practical Skills for Engaging in the Systems: Learn how to file and pursue a human rights complaint within the African human rights system.
