International Law of Armed Conflict and Challenges to its Enforcement

Course Description

Join the Monique and Roland Weyl People’s Academy of International Law for a focused examination of the International Law of Armed Conflict (ILAC) and Challenges to Its Enforcement. This course explores the core legal principles governing armed conflict, including the criminalization of violations, the doctrine of command responsibility, and mechanisms of international accountability. With a particular focus on the situation in Gaza, the course will critically engage with the application and enforcement of ILAC in contemporary conflicts.

Course Content

  • Understand the Foundations of the International Law of Armed Conflict: Explore the broad scope of law of armed conflict, including the historical development and legal foundations of the ILAC and governing bodies of law.
  • Examine the protections afforded to combatants and noncombatants under international law: Evaluate the responsibilities of states jus in bello, with particular attention to the treatment of civilians, prisoners of war, and other protected persons.
  • Analyze the Criminalization of Serious Violations: Study how grave breaches and war crimes are defined and prosecuted under international legal frameworks.
  • Learn about the doctrine of command responsibility: Understand how military and civilian superiors may be held accountable for the actions of subordinates.
  • Assess Challenges to Enforcement: Consider the legal, political, and practical barriers to the effective enforcement of the law of armed conflict.
  • Apply Legal Principles to Contemporary Conflict: Apply legal principles to the current situation in Gaza through a focused case study.
